Family Programs

At First Step Recovery, we provide an educational/process group every Wednesday night for individuals with a loved one in our chemical dependency programs. Adult family members and significant others are encouraged to attend as often as they are able during the months their loved one is in treatment.  You will be scheduled for an orientation meeting with the Family Counselor to learn more about the program and enroll in the sessions. Family Group meets on Wednesdays from 4:45pm to 5:45pm for a six-week Educational Curriculum, as well as group therapy each week from 6-8 p.m.

Common topics covered in the family programs for addiction are:

  • Education on substance use disorders and the disease model
  • Identification of enabling and codependent behaviors
  • Development of detachment skills
  • Importance of a personal recovery plan

Family members are also encouraged to attend the Thursday night lecture series, with their loved one who is in treatment. Topics include codependency, the disease of addiction, relationships and conflict management, mindfulness, self-care skills, the recovery process, nutrition and recovery, smoking cessation, and personal sharing by alumni about their experience.  The Lecture Series is on Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m. View the schedule of weekly Lecture Series topics here.
